Radarsat Wind KML File
Wind speed can be inferred from the radar cross section of the ocean surface measured from synthetic aperture radar (SAR). The KMZ files here are color-coded representations of wind speed from SAR imagery. Please note that the wind speed retrievals are only valid over open water. The colors over land or sea ice do not represent wind speed. In another layer in the KMZ file, we have included an ice mask from the Interactive Multisensor Snow and Ice Mapping System (IMS). Black represents open water, or areas outside the SAR image. 40% gray is land, 80% gray is sea ice, and white is snow.
