Strong south-southwesterly winds have pushed ice back into the Northeast Passage region of the Laptev Sea. On September 15, 2009, the passage was considered open because only trace amounts of ice remained floating in the area. However, imagery from 21-23 September, 2009 shows that ice has moved back into the area and will present a threat to operations on the water.
