Commander Tim B. Smith was born and raised in San Diego, CA graduating from Point Loma High School in 1986. Upon graduation, he attended University of California at Santa Cruz for one year before enlisting in the US Navy in 1988. While enlisted in the Navy, CDR Smith attended Machinist Mate "A" School, Naval Nuclear Power School, and the Nuclear Propulsion Training Unit in Windsor, CT where he was selected for instructor duty upon graduation. After one year of instructor duty, CDR Smith was selected for the Enlisted Commissioning Program and attended Oregon State University where he earned a Bachelor's of Science in Nuclear Engineering.
Upon graduation, CDR Smith attended Officer Candidate School in Newport, RI and received his commission on December 11, 1993.
While aboard USS Samuel B. Roberts (FFG-58) he did UNITAS and Mediterranean deployments. After serving subsequent tours as the Main Propulsion Assistant and Navigator, he reported to Special Boat Unit TWELVE in Coronado, CA as a Boat Detachment Officer in Charge.
